Advancing the science of volcanic gases
CCVG brings together an international community of researchers working to understand volcanic gases and their role in volcanic systems. Our members use diverse approaches — from direct gas sampling and laboratory analysis to remote sensing, in-situ measurements, diffuse degassing and airborne observations.
Together, we advance methods for measuring and interpreting volcanic emissions, share knowledge and expertise, and build the collaborations needed to address the challenges of understanding volcanic degassing.
Our Decadal Plan
A shared vision for the next decade of volcanic gas science
In 2022, the CCVG Board launched a Decadal Review to help define the future of the Commission and its goals for the decade ahead. A dedicated review team A dedicated review team — Nicole Bobrowski, Christoph Kern, Jennifer Lewicki and Maarten de Moor — was appointed to undertake the review and develop recommendations for the future of the CCVG. The resulting review identified four key themes — big questions, technical developments, infrastructure and community — and was presented to the CCVG community at the 15th Field Workshop in Hokkaido in September 2025. There, four Task Forces were established to turn these priorities into action. Since then, volunteers from the CCVG community have come together to build the Task Forces and take the Plan forward.
