The tradition began in 1982, when the Working Group on Volcanic Gases launched the first workshop at Vulcano, Italy, with the aim of bringing different teams together to “test and compare the different sampling and analysing techniques in the same place at the same moment”.

Over the following four decades, this principle has developed into a distinctive CCVG tradition of international field-based intercomparison. Workshops have brought together researchers using direct gas sampling, diffuse-degassing measurements, remote sensing, in situ sensors and plume measurements, alongside complementary geochemical and geophysical approaches.

Since 1982, 15 CCVG Field Workshops have been held across 11 countries, from Italy, Japan and New Zealand to Indonesia, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Mexico, Russia, Chile, Ecuador and Peru.
